Species: Calliphora vomitoria
Use: Feeder insect for mantises, frogs, spiders, fish, and more
Storage: Refrigeration required (see care below)
Hatch cycle: 7–10 days at room temp
Care Instructions: Keep Them Dormant Until Feeding Time
To keep your larvae fresh and prevent them from hatching into adult flies:
🧊 Refrigeration:
Temperature: Store at 33–40°F (0.5–4°C)
Container: Keep them in their vented deli cup or breathable container. Avoid sealed airtight containers.
Humidity: No added moisture is needed. Excess humidity may lead to premature hatching or rot.
🕒 Shelf Life:
In proper refrigeration, pupae will remain viable and dormant for 2–3 weeks.
Warmer temps will speed development — use promptly if left at room temp.
🐍 Feeding Out:
Remove desired number of pupae using tweezers or a small scoop and place into pet enclosure. Flies will develop after a few days allowing your pet a natural hunting experience!
Pro Tips:
Don’t freeze – freezing will kill them.
Never leave the cup out for long periods — they'll start to hatch quickly.
