My Thoughts:

Roaches are in one word “misunderstood” I have to say that I had many terrible and unfair thoughts when I first started keeping cockroaches.  I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Burrowing Species:

If the species in question prefers to burrow then a mix of coco fiber substrate, moss, and treated oak leaves will satisfy even the most picky roach.  Adding bark flats will allow them a moist place to congregate between misting.

Dry Climate Species:

When keeping species that prefer dryer conditions, they can easily be kept on egg flats that are stacked opposite of each other to prevent accidental squishing.

Diet:

A good diet is essential for raising healthy adults and a stable reproducing colony.  A diet of fresh cut fruits and vegetables supplemented with a basic mixture of dry starchy grains and protein make a great roach chow.  Food should never be allowed to mold and overfeeding can attracted grain mites which can devastate your roach colonies.

Make sure not to leave mature fruit fly cultures near your colonies as they commonly attract parasitic grain mites!

Many small starter groups can be maintained in small easy to manage insect cups until they grow or start to reproduce.
